Microsoft download manager not working windows 8

The download manager shows the attachments downloading, but it takes over 24 hours and then it quits and I am unable to download my attachments. This is ridiculous since I spent a fortune on this laptop to be able to do my coursework. Why can't I download anything anymore? Please tell me how to fix this problem. The system shows these docs downloading but will not open or complete the downloads!

Please Help I need these downloads for school! Question: What security programs firewall, antivirus, security suite, etc. Does the problem go away if security programs are disabled just long enough to test one download?
